About Our Village

Tideswell is a large village located in the picturesque Derbyshire Peak District. Dating back to the Doomsday Book, the village has a maze of alleyways and narrow roads in areas with quaint names such as Cherry Tree Square, Slancote Lane, and the Pot Market.

The Parish Church of Tideswell, St John The Baptist, is known as  the Cathedral of the Peak. Built between about 1320 and 1400, this exceptional building has many interesting  features such as the the ornate carved wooden screen which separates the Nave from the Chancel, and the beautiful Sedilla by the altar.

Tideswell Wakes is a village tradition that dates back almost 750 years, and incorporates the Tideswell Well Dressing which is undoubtedly one of the best in the Peak. For 2010 the well dressing festival begins on Saturday 19th June and the Tideswell Carnival is on Saturday 26th June. Confirmation of the dates for 2011 is presently awaited.

The Tideswell Community works hard to preserve its rural heritage, and although it has character and charm, along with it's picturesque location in the limestone Dales, it continues to serve as a focal point for the surrounding smaller villages and hamlets, providing services, industry and employment to the community.
